The Art of Hand Block Printing

Hand block printing is one of the most ancient and revered textile arts in history. It is a vanishing treasure in a mechanized world, and we are dedicated to keeping the art-form invigorated and alive. It is a labor intensive process which requires great skill.  Each color of a design is carved into a separate wooden block by hand, then the block is seasoned in mustard oil until ready to be used for printing...when cured, printing commences with the artisans skilled flowing motion of impressing the block filled with color onto the cotton — one block, one impression at a time. Unlike mass-produced digital machine made prints, hand block printing relies on the artisan’s steady hand, presence and physical pressure. This manual process leads to "perfectly imperfect" details... no machines, no shortcuts, and no two pieces are ever exactly the same. Our Halo and Swan scarves are direct hand printed with Azo Free pigment eco-friendly dyes and most of our RedRoad scarves are printed in a more complex technique of clay resist hand block printing, made by layered processes of printing and also cooking with natural dye recipes, made over wood fire in large copper vessels, or steeped in our indigo vats. A labor intensive process which creates a soulfully painterly textile, with a subtlety of patina, texture and natural color...valued by those who love a truly hand crafted artisan wearable textile. Variation in the printing is hallmark of authenticity in the craft.

We are dedicated to Organic Cotton, Eco friendly Azo free pigment dyes and natural plant and mineral dyes and responsibly source all of our materials, honoring both the environment and the centuries-old traditions of this craft. Every scarf carries within it the impression of human hands, the warmth and radiance of natural color, and the soul of authentic making.

Our Ethos

Our scarves are printed on Gots Certified Organic Cotton... a sustainable, non-toxic, and ethical alternative to conventional cotton, benefiting both the planet and farmers. By eliminating synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, organic cotton reduces water pollution by up to 91%, promotes healthier soil, and ensures safer, fairer conditions for workers. Your choice to wear Organic Cotton protects the water, the soil, the honeybees, the butterflies and songbirds, and inspires ethical environmentally protective manufacturing.

  • Environmental Protection: Organic farming uses far less water, lowers carbon emissions, and avoids dangerous pesticides that degrade soil and contaminate water sources.
  • Healthier Products: Free from toxic residues, organic cotton is hypoallergenic and safer for skin, and overall health, and often results in a softer, more durable product, over time.
  • Ethical Support: Organic certification often ensures fair wages and no child labor, supporting better livelihoods for farmers.
  • Sustainability: It preserves biodiversity, utilizing natural methods that encourage ecological balance.

The Beauty of Hand Printing

Variations in color, print registration, and dye saturation are not imperfections — they are the hallmarks of authentic hand block printing and the very qualities that make each piece one of a kind. These beautiful irregularities are a testament to the human hand behind every print, and what gives hand block printed textiles their warmth, soul, and enduring charm. Slight differences in the artisans pressing the wooden block can cause subtle gradients in color or blurred edges, giving the pattern an organic, "living" quality.

When you choose a Halo and Swan scarf, you are choosing a piece of living craft tradition — unique, intentional, and made with love. Our scarves wear beautifully with time...

Wabi Sabi & The Soul of Hand Block Printing

Wabi-sabi is a Japanese aesthetic and philosophical concept that centers on the beauty of imperfection — the subtlety of color and texture as a flower is fading, or the bark of a tree or the patina on beautiful old mossy stone steps that have been walked on for centuries...

The variations, the depth of natural dye, the gentle irregularities of indigo, pomegranate, madder, turmeric, marigold and iron etc — these are not flaws. They are the fingerprints of the maker. Plant and mineral alchemy made with earth, water, air, fire and love.

Sustainably & Responsibly Made

We are committed to transparency in our sourcing and production. Our scarves are made using azo free and natural dyes, responsibly sourced fabrics, and artisan networks that prioritize fair and ethical practices. We believe that beautiful things should be made beautifully — for the people who make them, and for the world we share.
